 Natural Capiz Shell |
Capiz, or Kapiz, or “Window Pane Shell”, or scientifically, Placuna Placenta (Linneaus 1758), a bi-valve with a translucent shell. It is traditionally used combined with wood as window pane light diffusers in Asia. It also produces pearls that are cultured commercially. Found in some coasts in India, Southern China, Malay Peninsula including Borneo, and abundantly in the Philippines. Its meat is edible, and has been the subject of research of Asian aquaculture agencies for its economic importance. It is one of the major fishery export of the Philippines as shell craft, lighting and home decoration. |

They are gathered by hand, diving and dredging, cleaned and then graded as to size, thickness and overall quality. Assembled by binding each shell with brass or tin foil and welding together using low heat solders. When made as pendants, they are tied by wire rings or nylon thread to make a continuous garland hung on wire frames to take different shapes. |
